RNA Movies - HOWTO install java on a unix like system

The following description should help to install the JRE (Java Runtime Enviroment) from Sun Microsytems Inc. and/or install the Java Plugin for Netscape/Mozilla under a unix like system.

  • download the Java SDK or JRE from SUN for your architecture/system and install it, following the installation instructions
Note: a better way may be to ask your system administrator
  • find out where the Java SDK is located on your system: which java
  • you will get a path like: /.../j2sdk1.4.0_01/bin/java
  • change to /.../j2sdk1.4.0_01/jre/plugin/<architecture>/ns4 for Netscape 4.x
    or
change to /.../j2sdk1.4.0_01/jre/plugin/<architecture>/ns600 for Netscape 6.x and early versions of Mozilla (<1.0)
    or
change to /.../j2sdk1.4.0_01/jre/plugin/<architecture>/ns610 for latest versions of Netscape/Mozilla
  • copy the name of the file that is in this folder (libjavaplugin_oji.so)
  • find out where the Netscape/Mozilla directory is located: e.g. /usr/lib/(netscape | mozilla)
    or
change to your local Netscape/Mozilla directory, located at $HOME/(.netscape | .mozilla)
  • go to the given path, change to plugins and create a softlink there with the name of the file in ns4 | ns600 | ns610 (libjavaplugin_oji.so) pointing to the original location of this file

<architecture> means the architecure of your system, e.g. i386 for intel based systems, sparc for solaris based systems, etc.
